Description
Leafrollers and leaftiers are small caterpillars that feed inside leaves, which they roll or tie together. They are similar in their habits, but leafrollers roll leaves around themselves, and leaftiers tie leaves together with silk threads. This feeding habit gives the insects some protection from unfavorable weather, predators, and chemical sprays. Leafrollers and leaftiers may be serious pests in the garden, feeding on many fruits, vegetables, and ornamentals. Their feeding habits vary, depending on their age. Only part of their life may be spent feeding inside the rolled or tied leaves. At other times they may feed inside buds, flowers, or fruit. They often drop from their protected location when disturbed. The species of leafrollers and leaftiers that feed on flowers and fruits are usually much more damaging than the species that feed exclusively on the leaves.
Control
Insecticides are most effective if they are applied before the larvae are protected inside the leaves. Check your plants periodically in the spring for the first sign of infestation. Spray ornamentals with an insecticide containing acephate or carbaryl. Spray fruits with an insecticide containing carbaryl, malathion, or diazinon. Make sure your plant is listed on the product label.
